The Paardeberg (Horse Mountains) is the landmark division between the Swartland and Paarl wine regions.  The diverse soil composition and climate of this area has been instrumental in creating exceptional wines.  From off-the-beaten track farms to large, modern cellars, this area promises a delightful wine experience.

Malmesbury forms the centre of the route and is also home to the Swartland Santam Wine Route offices.  Although predominantly known for its wheat production, top wines are being produced by members such as Swartland Cellars, Abbots Hill, Franki’s Vineyard, while the Wine Fly offers a perfect pitstop.

Wineries in the Paardeberg & Malmesbury Areas:

Abbotts Hill Winery situated on the farm Hillcrest Farm, the cellar has grown out of the owners' passion for red wine, and the dream to produce a wine that is unique and recognisable as one from the Malmesbury region.

Newcomer Annex Kloof Wines, also situated in the Paardeberg, recently received the 2006 Champion Wine Trophy of the Swartland for their wooded Malbec.

Babylon’s Peak Private Cellar situated on the farm Nooitgedacht, in the area known as Aprilskloof in the Paardeberg, was renovated in 2003 and produced its first vintage in the same year.  The winery is known for its Syrah and Syrah-blend wines.

Dragonridge Winery was established in 2004 and named after one of the mountains on the farm, resembling a sleeping dragon.  During the harvest season visitors can experience the art of winemaking during special getaways, with accommodation in their guesthouse Fynbos Mountain Retreat.

Franki’s Vineyards boasts unusual red and white grape cultivars, having the largest single plantation of Grenache Noir in combination with Mourvèdre and Viognier in South Africa.

The farm Lammershoek was first proclaimed in 1718 and the adjacent farm Welgelegen, in 1847.   The first vineyards were planted on the farm around 1750.  Lammerhoek is a boutique wine cellar and their wines are predominately exported. They produce full-bodied, spicy wines grown mostly as dry land bush vines.

Nassau Winery is a family concern and situated on the farm of the Lambrecht’s family, off the R302 (Klipheuwel Road).   This wheat, sheep and wine farm offers a unique farm experience to be enjoyed by young and old.

Near Malmesbury Swartland Winery, with its tasting room situated in a beautiful Manor House, offer quality wines with their selection of premium wines under the Idelia, Indalo and Swartland Reserve labels.  The grapes used to make these wines are from specially selected vineyards in the Swartland Region.  When visiting the winery, you will experience some of the best wines that this area has to offer, including the well known Swartland range.  Bookings for tour groups and cellar tours are essential and meals can be arranged on request.
