The Mostert family has been farming with wine grapes since 1965, but Johan was the first to try his hand at making his own wine in 2001. The first year was a learning curve with plenty of lessons learned. Johan persevered with the support of friend and mentor Marais de Villiers and produced his first shiraz followed soon by a fruity chenin blanc.
Today Nieuwedrift is well known in the local wine industry and has already won Vinpro’s Best Vineyard Practice evaluation competition for the Swartland in 2003 (chardonnay), 2004 (chenin blanc) and 2006 (shiraz) respectively. Approximately 400 tones of grapes are harvested on the farm of which only five tones are selected for the boutique cellar on the farm. The rest are supplied to the co-operative cellar at Porterville.
Bacchus, the wine god, guards the entrance to the spacious tasting room – called Die Wijnhuis - where the farm’s shiraz and chenin blanc can be sampled. The tasting room doubles up as art gallery for the paintings of resident artist Karin Mostert, Johan’s wife. It is also utilized for various functions and caters for up to 60 people.
The farm boasts a self-catering cottage 'Bettie se huisie', for those who wish to linger longer and experience a working wheat and wine farm.
