At Nieuwedrift Vineyards, Johan Mostert and his artist wife Karin welcome visitors with open arms. The Mostert family has been farming with wine grapes since 1965, but Johan was the first to try his hand at making his own wine in 2002. The first year was a learning curve and, with the support of friend and mentor Marais de Villiers, Johan produced his first fruity Chenin Blanc, followed by a barrel-matured Shiraz. Approximately 400 tonnes of grapes are harvested on the farm, of which only a few tonnes are selected for the boutique cellar. The rest are supplied to the Tulbagh cellar at Porterville. The wine god Bacchus guards the entrance to the spacious tasting room, Nieuwedrift Wijnhuis, where the farm’s Shiraz, Blanc de Noir, Chenin Blanc and Méthod Cap Classique can be sampled. The tasting room doubles as an art gallery for the paintings of resident artist Karin, and is also utilised for functions for up to 60 people. Bettie se Huisie is a self-catering cottage for those who wish to linger longer and experience a working wheat and wine farm. |
