Located on the original route taken all those years ago by explorer Pieter van Meerhof, and aptly named after him, Meerhof produces fine wines that are world known and well loved. Just as the extraordinary man who ‘discovered’ this fertile valley, so has Meerhof discovered - through excellent climate, excellent soil and excellent knowledge - its range of world-class wines. Meerhof is owned by Cobus Kotze and the Kotze Family Trust. lt was bought in 1961 as a wheat and sheep farm. Until 2000, the few grapes that grew here were delivered to Riebeek Cellars, but then Cobus decided to realise his dream and turn the estate into a wine farm, producing its own range of wines. In 2001 a site with stunning panoramic views over the valley was chosen for Meerhof's main cellar, carefully designed with a partial underground area for gentle cooling. Meerhof now has a 300-tonne production capacity and concentrates mainly on reds, with a small amount of Chardonnay and two hectares of Weisser Riesling. Traditional open fermentation is used, a rare method in today's world of stainless-steel vats; the Shiraz, Merlot, Cinsaut, Cabernet and Pinotage are all fermented this way. Various French oaks are used, with only a few utilising American oak to give a subtle caramel flavour. |
